Act 4: The rest of the file

The file as one coherent argument

Every document in your application is read by the same person, in one sitting. They are checking, informally, whether the documents agree.

Most applicants build each piece separately. The statement gets written in one week, the CV updated in another, the recommenders briefed in a third. Each is fine. Together they describe three slightly different people.

What inconsistency looks like:

Your statement says your focus is research. Your CV leads with three years of unrelated employment and buries the project. Your recommender writes warmly about your reliability and punctuality.

Nothing there is false. But the reader has to work out which version is accurate, and files that require work get less benefit of the doubt.

What coherence looks like:

Your statement claims you want to work on X, because of a specific project. Your CV has that project near the top with the relevant detail visible. Your recommender — because you sent them a note, post 20 — writes specifically about your work on it. Your fit paragraph names courses that address exactly the gap you described.

Same evidence, arranged to say one thing.

A pass worth doing before you submit:

Read all your documents in the order a committee would — CV, statement, letters — in one sitting, as if you’d never seen them.

Then ask three questions:

What is this person’s claim? If you can’t state it in one sentence after reading everything, neither can they.

Does every document support it? Anything that doesn’t should move down, come out, or be reframed.

Is anything contradicted? A skill claimed and unevidenced. A focus stated but absent from the CV. A gap named in one place and ignored elsewhere.

This costs an hour and it’s the last real improvement available. It doesn’t require new material — just arranging what you have so it says one thing clearly.
