Act 3: The statement of purpose

Before and after, one real paragraph

A real rewrite, with the reasoning shown. Details changed; not identifiable.

Before:

“I have always been passionate about data science and its potential to transform industries. During my undergraduate studies, I worked on several projects that strengthened my analytical skills and gave me valuable experience with various tools and technologies. I am confident that your esteemed programme will help me achieve my career goals.”

Sixty-one words. Now count the information: none. Every sentence could be signed by any applicant in the pile.

After:

“My final-year project forecast demand for a local distributor using two years of their sales data. The model performed well in backtesting and poorly in deployment — it had learned a seasonal pattern that the pandemic years had distorted. Diagnosing that taught me more than the model did, and it’s why I want formal grounding in time-series methods rather than more practice fitting them.”

Sixty-three words. Almost the same length.

What changed:

A specific project replaced “several projects”. One real thing, described, beats an unspecified quantity of unspecified things.

A failure replaced a success. The honest outcome is more persuasive than a claimed one, because it shows you can evaluate your own work — which is most of what postgraduate study requires.

“Analytical skills” became a named problem. Distribution shift, described in plain terms. Concrete and checkable.

The gap appeared. “Formal grounding in time-series methods rather than more practice fitting them” — a precise statement of what’s missing, which is the thing that makes the application necessary rather than merely desirable.

“Esteemed programme” disappeared. Flattery removed. Nothing was lost.

Note what the rewrite did not need: a more impressive project, a better outcome, or better English. Same student, same work, same word count.

The difference is that the second paragraph says something only that person could say.
