Act 3: The statement of purpose

Your SOP opening is doing nothing

“Since childhood, I have been fascinated by technology.”

Some version of that line opens an enormous share of statements, and it does nothing. It’s unverifiable, unspecific, and true of everyone applying.

Worse, it spends the position that matters most. Post 12 covered how files get scanned — your first two lines may be the only part of the statement read in the first pass. Using them on a childhood anecdote means your strongest claim sits in paragraph three, where it may not be reached.

The other openings in the same family:

“In today’s rapidly evolving world…” — no information. “I am writing to apply for the MSc in…” — they know. “Education is the most powerful weapon…” — a quotation is someone else’s sentence.

What works instead: start where you actually are.

Open with the specific thing you’ve done, the specific problem you want to work on, or the specific gap you’re closing. Concrete, checkable, and only true of you.

Weak: “I have always been passionate about machine learning and its applications in healthcare.”

Stronger: “I spent eight months building a diagnostic classifier that worked in testing and failed in the clinic, and I want to understand why.”

The second tells a reader what you did, that you’re honest about outcomes, and what question you’re bringing — in one sentence. It’s also impossible to have copied from anyone.

A useful test: if another applicant could sign their name under your opening paragraph, rewrite it. Passion, fascination and rapid evolution are shared. Your eight months and your specific failure are not.

You don’t need a dramatic story. Most applicants don’t have one. You need a true, specific first sentence — and the willingness to open with the work rather than the feeling about the work.
